What measures should a traveller expect on arrival?
On arrival in Barbados, your COVID-19 PCR test result will be screened for validity. Once completed, you will be guided to immigration, and then you may be required to reconfirm your first negative COVID-19 PCR test with a rapid (COVID-19 antigen) test. Results of this will be provided before you exit the airport. You will then be able to collect your luggage to exit the airport.
Is it mandatory to have a valid PCR test to enter the island?
All travellers are required to present proof of a valid negative COVID-19 PCR test which was taken at an accredited or recognized laboratory within 3 days prior to arrival.
Please take special note that the date of the test and not the date of the result is what will be assessed against the 3-day time frame.
Can I fly to Barbados without a negative COVID-19 PCR test?
No, all travellers are required to present proof of a valid negative COVID-19 PCR test which was taken at an accredited or recognized laboratory within 3 days prior to arrival which should be presented at check-in at your port of embarkation, as well as on arrival in Barbados. Test results must be validated in order to facilitate boarding and entry into Barbados.
Are COVID-19 home or rapid tests considered valid to travel to Barbados?
Self-samples, rapid tests or home tests will be considered invalid.
For your COVID-19 PCR test to be considered for validation, your test must be taken at an accredited or certified facility/laboratory by:
- Nasopharyngeal or oropharyngeal sample (or both). Neither saliva nor nasal swabs will be accepted.
- A healthcare provider.
Relevant accrediting bodies and standards include: ISO:15189, CAP, UKAS or the equivalent.
Is there an age restriction for testing?
Travellers under 5 years of age will not be required to have a COVID-19 PCR test unless they are symptomatic or any member of the travel party has a positive test result.
Once I arrive in Barbados, can I proceed on holiday after I have received/presented proof of a negative COVID-19 PCR test result?
Travellers will be required to retest with a COVID-19 PCR test 5 days (120 hours) after their arrival in the country. If the result of that second PCR test is negative, that traveller can now enjoy unrestricted movement. Travellers who refuse to have a second test may be denied entry or quarantined for 14 days. *Due to the limited capacity, the government quarantine facilities, which are provided free of cost, will only be available for Barbadians and permanent residents arriving in Barbados.
What happens if my test result is positive?
If you test positive for COVID-19 while in Barbados, you will first be assessed at a government facility for a minimum of 24 hours. After which, you may request from the Ministry of Health and Wellness the option to self-isolate at your own expense at your hotel or villa, or government-approved isolation property. This can be facilitated under strict stipulations that must be signed as accepted and proven to be in place. Alternately, you will be transported to other accommodation for isolation. Upon recovery, you can resume your vacation or you may return home.
Who covers the cost of the isolation and treatment period for travellers who test positive?
There is no charge to stay in government quarantine and isolation facilities. However, if a traveller is approved for self-isolation, they will be required to cover all associated expenses.
If a passenger tests positive for COVID-19 upon arrival in Barbados, can they simply return to their country of origin rather than go into isolation in Barbados?
No, if you have tested positive, you will be transported to an alternative accommodation on island for isolation and treatment where you’ll stay until you’ve recovered. Upon recovery, you can resume your vacation or return home.
What happens if I’ve been identified as a contact of a positive case?
Those persons who are deemed to have been in close contact with a positive case will be restricted to approved facilities until retested and cleared by health officials.
